Domain Name and Branding
When putting up an Internet website, one consideration that must be on top of the list is the registration of a domain name. Having your own domain name is very important for it shows how serious you are as an online player.
One common mistake by startups is getting a domain name that has no uniqueness. You must remember that people remember brands more than their common names.
That’s why when I thought of putting up a website for my book, DigitalFilipino as a brand struck me and I immediately registered its domain name. Everything else followed and I was unstoppable. The same is my advise to you. When an idea strikes, act on it quickly and start by registering and protecting the domain name.
Another factor that you have to consider in getting a domain name is that it must be speak-able and easy to remember. When people hear it, they must not confuse it with something else or misspell it. Avoid using domain names that uses a hyphen or “-“. This is only ok if the word you are using is known for having one.
Domain name registration cost varies. It is normal to expect that top level domain names (com, net, org) are cheaper compared to any country level domain name (ph, vn, kr, th, tv). You can get your domain names locally at:
Top level domains such .com, .org, .net can also be acquired through Dotster.com.
Domain name registration is on a first-come first-serve basis. Any dispute on the use of one’s name can be taken to the courts for proper action or go for a dispute resolution process at ICANN.
Due to the increasing number of spammers online, it is also important, if you can afford, to register a domain name for five years. This way, you will appear as truly serious with your online endeavor.
It is important that you read the legal terms of agreement before proceeding with any online agreement such as domain name acquisition, web hosting, online payments, and other forms of service. Ignorance and the lack of due diligence in reading the terms of agreement prior to accepting any online service does not excuse anyone from liabilities.
This is an imperative especially for those who avail of free or very cheap domain name registration services.
Making your online identity stick and be considered as valuable source is not easy to get and even hard to maintain if you have it. The name is not everything. What you offer, its quality, and promotional programs will matter a lot to your success. Be first, fast, and focused.
