State of Philippine Internet Service Providers Report
In the State of Philippine Internet Service Providers Report, 7th issue of the DigitalFilipino StatsReport, shows that Internet Service Providers (ISPs), especially the small ones, are facing extinction in the next 2 years.
Eight (8) ISPs from Metro Manila, Dagupan City, Ormoc City, Iloilo City, Batangas, Bulacan were interviewed to come up with this report. Although we wrote to more than 100 ISPs, only a few cooperated for the purpose of this report.
The extinction of small ISPs is a reality that will happen sooner or later as carriers penetrate the dial-up subscription consumer market that comprises more than half of the revenue source of ISPs today. Not unless government officials and policy makers do something about it where they are the only ones in power to prevent this from happening.
Some of the report highlights are:
- All respondent ISPs gave government a poor rating as its support to the industry in addressing unfair competition concerns is hardly felt.
- Despite the oversupply of bandwidth and ease in getting a leased line, ISPs can’t compete competitively in terms of pricing versus the carriers.
- Chances for ISP survival will be dependent on their capability and access to opportunities shifting revenue dependence from dial-up subscriptions to new forms of services.
